I like to share my thoughts and day to day travels over social media. Whether it be a new favourite item that I want to feature or a little cafe that I just stumbled upon with great esthetics. But there is one place that I don't share with anyone. This place is super top secret and I like to keep it to myself so that no one can even find it! Just kidding, it's the gym.
I have been on a fitness journey over the past year and a half, and I've been meeting some pretty motivational people and learning a ton about my body and how to build it. It's not that I don't want to share this time on my social media (trust me, I spend a lot of time at the gym), it's simply that - for me - the gym is my no phone zone.
I love working out and pushing my body to the limits. However, anytime that I have worked out with my phone in the past I found that I got easily distracted, workouts and rest times became unnecessarily longer, sometimes I would get called away for a work call and overall was not doing my best or bringing my A-game. So I made the conscious decision to leave my phone in my locker.
Now that this has become the norm for me, I have found myself become painfully aware of everyone else around me distracted by their technology and not working out to their fullest potential. Not only do I find this counter productive but I also think its very anti-social and sometimes inconsiderate to those around you waiting to jump on that machine or waiting to grab that dumbbell sitting on the floor by your towel. I appreciate and understand that people use their phones/devices as a tool to assist in their workouts. Whether it be music, workout tutorials or timers. But I feel there needs to be a line drawn when people fall into lengthy texting conversations.
I realize that not everyone feels the same way about the gym as I do, but I would hope that others would give it a try and look at the gym as an energizer or refresher for the body and brain. Next time you go to the gym, I encourage you to try leaving your phone in your locker or gym bag. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. You might even find yourself with a new no phone zone!
